Until the whole world hears (Emily Cooley’s story)

Have you ever met someone who literally just RADIATES Jesus? That is Emily Cooley. She is truly one of the sweetest, most joyful, passionate-about-Jesus people that I know. We first met over ten years ago (how??), when I was a junior in high school, and she was a freshman. A couple years laters we went on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic together, and proceeded to go back together several more times. The Lord used those trips to move in both of us and create even more of a “heart for the nations”.

(Throw back to me, Emily, and a couple of our friends being super cool painters in the DR, circa 2013)

Fast forward to now, and Emily is still incredibly passionate about reaching the nations with the gospel. Read on to hear her tell a little bit about her story and how she is living her life completely focused on God’s bigger picture.

“My sweet husband, Justin, and I were headed towards the “All-American Dream.” I was a Kindergarten teacher, he was a police office. We were about to get married and started looking for our first home with an adorable, white picket fence. But that was our dream for our lives, not God’s.

You see, right before we got married, Justin and I decided to take a class called Perspectives (https://www.perspectives.org). The class went through a biblical, historical, and strategic perspective of global missions. Our eyes were opened to some staggering statistics:

•There are about 3 billion people who currently have little to no access to the Gospel. 97% of them reside in the 10/40 Window.

• Approximately 66,000 people die every day without ever hearing a meaningful presentation of the Gospel.

• There are still 7,000 people groups who have yet to hear and receive the Gospel.

• Less than 10% of missionaries overseas currently reside within the 10/40 Window.

Our love of Jesus and the knowledge of the state of the world elicited one response as we looked at each other and said, “Well, what are we going to do about it?”

Laying down the dreams of success in our careers, financial stability, and having a wonderful community of friends and family close by was painful. And quite honestly, it doesn’t even make sense. At least not until we started looking at “the bigger picture.” With an eternal mindset, it all makes sense. Those 66,000 people that die everyday without the hope of experiencing the love of Jesus and having an eternity with Him need to hear the Truth, so we will go.

“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in?

And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?

And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?” Romans 10:13-14

After some intensive biblical training, Justin and I will be moving to the Himalayas to reach those who have not yet heard the name of Jesus. We will spend the mornings focused on prayer and worship and evenings in language school and evangelizing. We will continue to make His name known in the nations until He tells us otherwise.

At the root of it all is the worthiness of our King. He is worth every trial, sacrifice, and hardship in this life. He is also worth the praise of all nations. Jesus, you really are worth it all, so we will go.

Until the Whole World Hears,

Emily & Justin Cooley”

I told you she was passionate about reaching the nations with the gospel!! Truly inspiring. We aren’t all going to move to the Himalayas, but we should all have the same mindset that Emily and her husband (who she started dating after they both came on one of our Dominican mission trips!) have. As believers, we should all be passionate about making sure every person has the chance to hear the same Good News that has saved us. I hope Emily’s story has inspired you to want to reach someone with the gospel – whether they are next door or on the other side of the world!

Living for His Bigger Picture,

Megan Downer
